Here's the sunset as we are about to drive over the hills and up the canyon. more sunset more sunset When we woke up in Zion, we decided to take the bus up the canyon and walk up by the stream for a bit. Looking down the canyon as the sun rises over the eastern rim.

Sunrise in Zion. Sunrise in Zion. I forget what this formation was called; maybe The Patriarchs? I think this was part of Angels Landing, which we decided not to do on account of the long ascent along a narrow (~3ft wide in places?) path, with a steep several-hundred-foot drop-off on both sides. Yay vertigo! I forget the name of this one, too. It was something like The Chapel, or The Pulpit. The big rock pillar in the foreground (if you can tell) was supposed to be reminiscent of a pulpit.

Really stunning as the sun is now mostly over the rim. Still some shade in places, though. We had originally planned to take it easy and not go on a long hike in the beating sun up to the rim, but curiosity got the better of us, and we got off the bus on the way back to the campsite at the head of the trail up to the eastern rim. At this point it felt like we were halfway up, but it soon transpired that we had ... a ways more to go.

The Weeping Rock (or something like that)

At this point we've hiked up through a side canyon and around this hump in the foreground.

  Yay for canyon squirrels.

Looking further out into the eastern parts of the canyon.

We've now hiked a good ways up and you can see the main canyon bed. I can't imagine living on the top of one of these mesas, but perhaps someone did?

Some pretty flowers. Nearly to the top of the rim now. Looking back along the edge of the mesa that we've just scaled. This shot is taken from pretty much the tip of the mesa. The main canyon is on the left, but we came up through a side canyon on the right. Some mesa wildlife.

  Wow.

That's the path we took to get up here.

A nice shot of the western rim. Flowers on the top of the mesa. Flowers on the top of the mesa. Flowers on the top of the mesa.

Flowers on the top of the mesa. Flowers on the top of the mesa. Flowers on the top of the mesa. Flowers on the top of the mesa. Flowers on the top of the mesa.

Kind of hanging on by a thread, eh?
