Actually I think this one is from Pike's Peak, on the way back down... this one too... ... and this one... ... and this one... Ok, here we go. So I don't remember the name of this river, but I think it was in Colorado (mainly because there is still some vegetation). We kind of drove down a big canyon and this was a rest stop more or less at the bottom, if I remember correctly. I also remember it being quite hot.

a view of the mesas from the rest stop another view from the rest stop After truckin' along on I-70 for a while, we came up on the San Rafael reef (used to be a reef back when this place was a big ocean). Apparently Marie Curie visited once because the place has some radioactive stuff around (I could have that totally wrong...). It was amazingly cool. Unfortunately we didn't stop inside (I regretted that decision pretty quickly). This is a view of the reef before we entered, taken from another rest stop. BTW, we're now in Utah. You can tell because the vegetation is scrappy. Endless miles of scrappy vegetation, canyons, mesas, and heat give a pretty surreal effect. Still the San Rafael rest stop, just looking out to the NE. Still San Rafael.

And again, San Rafael. Some desert flora. This and the next one are supposed to be panoramic. As I write this 1 year after taking the pictures, it occurs to me that I'm kind of lazy. A panoramic shot looking out over the highway we just drove down.

San Rafael. More of the landscape on the east side of the San Rafael reef. Catherine is taking a picture of me. A different rest stop looking out into some of the canyons of Utah. more canyons
